As the automotive industry continues to evolve, the role of regulation in shaping the landscape of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) has become increasingly significant. With the introduction of new regulations such as the General Safety Regulation (GSR) II, set to commence in July 2024, mandatory ADAS features will become a standard requirement for new vehicles.

The European automotive industry stands as one of the most heavily regulated sectors, navigating through a complex web of over 150 EU regulations and 30 directives. In this intricate regulatory environment, collaboration between industry and regulators is paramount to ensure coherence and competitiveness on a global scale.

Sigrid de Vries, Director General of the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA), highlights the industry’s commitment to smarter regulation in the pursuit of a greener, more competitive future. Rather than drowning in a sea of legislation, the focus is on streamlining regulations to unlock the industry’s full potential, particularly in the development and implementation of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS).

As the automotive industry prepares for the implementation of GSR II and the mandatory inclusion of ADAS technologies, collaboration between regulators, manufacturers, and other stakeholders will be essential. By working together, they can ensure that the transition is smooth and that the benefits of ADAS technologies are maximized for all road users.

Additionally, according to the report on the Global Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) Market by ResearchAndMarkets.com, the industry is projected to reach $60.1 billion by 2028. This surge is attributed to the widespread adoption of advanced safety features in vehicles, underscoring the pivotal role of ADAS technologies in shaping the future of automotive innovation and competitiveness.

While the implementation of mandatory ADAS technologies may initially impact vehicle costs, there is optimism that over time, as technology advances and economies of scale are realized, the costs associated with ADAS systems will decrease. As with any new technology, initial costs are often higher, but as adoption increases and manufacturing processes improve, prices tend to become more accessible.

This transition to mandatory ADAS features underscores the industry’s commitment to innovation and safety. By aligning regulatory requirements with technological advancements, regulators and industry stakeholders are working together to create a safer, more sustainable future for mobility.

Fleet managers grapple with the aftermath of collisions involving their drivers, including repair costs, increased insurance premiums, and potential harm to the company’s reputation. Addressing distracted driving, specifically the use of mobile phones, becomes a paramount concern for enhancing road safety.

Distracted driving poses a significant risk, leading to human errors, collisions, and potential harm to vulnerable road users. Recognizing the importance of mitigating distractions, especially from mobile phones, is crucial for fleet managers.

Distracted Driving Prevention System (DDPS) technology emerges as a powerful tool to prevent drivers from using their cell phones for non-essential purposes, ensuring that their focus remains on the road. This technology aims to eliminate distractions caused by mobile devices, thereby enhancing the safety of both the driver and surrounding road users.

DDPS technology employs sophisticated algorithms to identify when a driver is attempting to use their mobile phone for non-essential functions. The system intervenes by restricting access to distracting applications, allowing only essential functionalities such as phone calls and GPS usage.

Integrating DDPS technology into corporate fleets involves strategic planning and implementation:

Analyze the extent of distracted driving incidents within your fleet, considering factors like accident reports, driver feedback, and telematics data.

Define clear objectives for reducing distracted driving incidents and improving overall fleet safety.
Select and implement a suitable DDPS solution tailored to your fleet’s needs and priorities.
Roll out the DDPS technology across your fleet, ensuring proper installation and functionality.
DDPS technology stands as a pivotal solution in curbing distracted driving within corporate fleets, promoting a safer driving environment and reducing the associated risks.

Fleet managers adopting this technology demonstrate a commitment to road safety, protecting their drivers, and enhancing overall fleet efficiency.

The last thing anyone wants is to be in a motorcar accident. Obviously the worst outcome of becoming distracted at the wheel is severe injury or death. The fact is that distracted driving is one of the most significant causes of road accidents, injuries, and fatalities. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, in the USA (NHTSA), distracted driving claimed 3,142 lives in 2019, an increase of 10% from 2018 and this figure continues to climb upwards. Distracted driving not only endangers the drivers and passengers, but also other road users and pedestrians.

For businesses that rely on fleets of vehicles, such as delivery services, transportation companies, or construction firms, distracted driving can have serious consequences. It can take a vehicle and driver off of the road for a period of time making fulfilling commitments a real challenge. There are also of course the cost of vehicle repairs, medical bills, legal fees, and insurance premiums. In addition, careless driving, especially when it results in an accident can damage the reputation and brand image of the business, as well as affect the productivity and morale of their employees.

That’s why investing in distracted driving systems can be a smart move for businesses that want to reduce the risks and costs associated with distracted driving. Distracted driving systems are technologies that monitor the driver’s behavior and alert them when they are distracted or drowsy. They can also act to remove the distraction completely. Some examples of distracted driving systems are:

  • In-vehicle cameras that detect the driver’s eye movements, head position, and facial expressions.
  • Mobile apps that block incoming calls, texts, and notifications while driving.
  • Voice assistants that enable hands-free communication and navigation.
  • Feedback devices such as AWS that provide auditory, visual, or haptic warnings when the driver is distracted.

Businesses can benefit by installing these systems in their vehicles. Many come pre-installed in the vehicle, while some may need to be retrofitted and others may be installed on the drivers mobile device. Some systems are free, others may cost money to install but the advantages of these systems probably pay for themselves.

  • Reduced accidents: Distracted driving systems can help prevent or mitigate collisions by alerting the driver to potential hazards and prompting them to take corrective actions.
  • Lowered insurance premiums: Distracted driving systems can demonstrate to insurance companies that the business is taking proactive measures to improve safety and reduce claims. This can lead to lower insurance rates and discounts for the business.
  • Enhanced operational efficiency: Distracted driving systems can improve the performance and productivity of the drivers by reducing fatigue, stress, and errors. This can result in better customer service, faster delivery times, and lower fuel consumption.
  • Improved employee retention: Installing distracted driving systems in company vehicles can show the employees that the business cares about their well-being and safety. This can improve worker satisfaction which in turn improves their loyalty and productiveness.

Installing any measure to limit driver distraction for a company driver is a long-term gain for the driver, the company and of course the client. They may cost money initially to install but the payback, by raising the profile of the company and reducing accidents will certainly pay for itself in the long run.

Most people have done it and live to tell the tale. The use of the word “most” means that there are a minority of cases where texting whilst driving leads to serious repercussions. Let’s analyze the problem, why it occurs and the potential problems it can lead to.

Our pace of life has never been faster, multi research papers prove it. We flit from one task to another aided by devices that allow us to be on call the whole time. Disconnecting from our communication devices is becoming increasingly difficult. People expect to be able to contact us and receive a reply almost instantaneously throughout the day. We are using multiple applications, from telephones, social media, messaging apps and texts. Trying to switch off from them is a challenge. Trying to relax, take time away from the office or concentrate on a task that needs to be done well is a real challenge.

When you’re driving your eyes have to be open and on the road watching the cars around you, road signs, and traffic lights. Along with your mind on the road and destination. Which means you are multitasking. When you’re texting your eyes are on your cell phone screen and keypad. Along with your mind on what you’re going to say next. So how can you do both? Please stop!”

Jonathan Anthony Burkett, Neglected But Undefeated: The Life Of A Boy Who Never Knew A Mother’s Love

The fact that driving and texting is dangerous is plain common sense. The moment that you are concentrating on your phone, you are not concentrating on the road. That might be the moment a car or a person appears unexpectedly, your ability to react is greatly reduced as your eyes are elsewhere.

The CDC predicts that over 3000 people will die due to distracted driving in the USA in 2023, 8% of all fatalities caused by a motor vehicle. Death of course is the worst case scenario. In that split moment that your eyes are not fully on the wheel, you could of course injure somebody, or cause damage to your car. According to the National Traffic Safety Administration, phone use is a contributing factor in 12% of all car accidents on US roads.

When a company car or vehicle is involved in an accident, it may be taken off of the road. The costs relating to this are higher than you would expect as not only does the car have to be fixed, insurance claims have to be filed, premiums go up and there is a period of time while the driver and the vehicle may be unavailable. This valuable time means that business comes to a standstill meaning a loss of earnings.

We all know that texting and driving is dangerous and we try to educate our children of the fact when they are driving. Yet when they see us on occasions even just glance at our phones as a message comes through, they learn from our example and not our words.

It is possible that distracted driving whilst texting may cause absolutely no outcome but it is most certainly dangerous and can lead to a potential accident which could result in a car being off the road, an insurance claim, a damaged vehicle, an injured driver or pedestrian and in the worst case scenario a fatality.

We all know that the majority of car accidents are caused by driver error. It is of course possible that something goes wrong with the car and the driver is unable to control it but a responsible driver makes sure that this does not happen. They check their cars regularly, pay attention to the servicing requirements and in most places in the world they are checked yearly to make sure that they are safe to be on the road.

Modern cars are much more complicated than those of our parents or grandparents generation. There are many more electrical components; the cars have many more functions than they had before. They have electric windows, multimedia systems and most importantly in the last decade in particular, many companies have installed advanced systems to help the driver to be more aware of their surroundings or to warn them of possible problems with their cars.

Engine Warning Systems

On the dashboard there are many lights that may warn of a possible issue with the car. There are engine warning lights that tell you that the car’s engine may not be running properly. The exact problem may need to be read by linking up a computer but the driver knows to get the car checked out for any potential issue. There are also tire warning lights that warn you that pressure in your tire is low. This is an essential feature as the driver knows to stop immediately to check their wheels for any problems. Previous to this, the driver may have been totally unaware of the issue and risked losing control of their car.

ABS and Traction Control

Anti-lock brakes are an important addition to a car and are generally standard. They help to make sure that the car wheels are able to turn a little even when the driver brakes hard. This makes sure that the car does not skid. Traction control is an electronic system based on sensors that make sure all wheels are turning at the same speed, preventing wheel spin. This helps the driver to maintain control whilst cornering fast or driving in icy conditions.

Collision Warning Systems

Many new cars in recent years have started installing these systems as standard and many use it as a strong part of their marketing strategy. Often insurance companies will give the owner a discount if they install them in their car. These systems warn the driver if a car or pedestrian is too close to them, or if they have veered out of their lane allowing them to take action. There are more complex systems that may even brake in the case of an emergency without the driver having to apply the brakes himself.

Not All Technology Makes Cars Safer

Multimedia systems and car phones have been proven to cause accidents as people find it difficult to ignore them when they are driving. The lack of attention due to telephone use is the leading cause of accidents worldwide, one that many companies are trying to address.

Will Driving Become Safer?

There is no question that the safety innovations in cars are helping the driver to react or control the car in the case of an emergency. However, the increase of cars on the road and the constant distractions that many people are unable to ignore from their cellphones are counteracting the positive technology. If we can find a way of educating or stopping people from becoming distracted by technology, then the technology that car manufacturers are installing in their vehicles should make driving a much safer experience.

Until recently, if we wanted to know how a person drove, we would have four options: Sit next to them and watch, install a tachograph, have a number for the public to call on the back of the vehicle or rely on police reports. Each one of those methods was fraught with issues. You can’t sit next to somebody all the time and doing so for a short period may not be a true reflection of how they normally drive. Police reports are only useful in telling you that they were guilty of an infringement and only if they are actually caught. The numbers on the back of the vehicles for the public to call are only useful if someone actually calls them, which is a rather difficult and possibly illegal thing to do when you are driving. Finally tachographs are only fitted on large vehicles, do not produce information in real time and can only give the reader limited information.

The reasons for monitoring driving behavior

The need or wish to monitor a driver’s behavior is not purely curiosity. So many accidents occur because of reckless driving. Driver’s may be pressured to get between two places quickly, they may be distracted by their telephone or of course their judgment may be inhibited by drugs or alcohol. The people monitoring the driving may be the company a person works for or the person insuring the vehicle. The purpose of monitoring the vehicle and how it is being driven is to promote good driving habits and dissuade bad ones. An accident caused by reckless driving costs both time and money. Time when the car and driver are off the road and money to replace or repair the vehicle.

How technology is helping

Recent advances in technology are helping to monitor a driver’s performance and habits more accurately and in real time. There is no longer a need to wait for the vehicle to return to read the tachograph, notice damage to the vehicle or a 3 month delay to receive a speeding ticket. There are different types of driving behavior monitoring systems, depending on the purpose and the level of detail required. Some systems use sensors embedded in the vehicle, such as GPS, cameras, radars, or accelerometers, to capture data on the vehicle’s movement and surroundings. Other systems use smartphone apps or wearable devices that connect to the vehicle via Bluetooth or OBD-II port, to collect data on the driver’s actions and reactions. Some systems combine both types of sensors to get a more comprehensive picture of driving behavior.

Privacy issues

There are some who claim that by collecting data on their driving habits, their privacy is being invaded. However, the companies doing this are open that they are doing it, and how they are doing it. It is either the company that they work for or an insurance company. The person does not have to take out that particular insurance policy and does not have to work for that company if they feel threatened by the technology.

The Future

In an ideal world, drivers would not become distracted and they would always drive carefully. Vehicular accidents through driver error would be almost nonexistent. Unfortunately, people don’t always drive as if their mother or grandmother is sitting next to them. There are more and more distractions that could lead to an accident. So monitoring a driver’s habits with indisputable data is the way forward. With this you can analyze the way a vehicle is handled on a regular and constant basis, which promotes better driving and will lead to less accidents and road fatalities.

So many people rely on our road network for their livelihoods. There are those who make deliveries such as truck drivers and couriers. We have the emergency services who have to drive at high speeds to save lives. There are sales representatives going from appointment to appointment and finally there are taxi and bus drivers who have to transport people from place to place. All these people have demanding driving schedules but do their unique challenges affect the way they drive?

“More than 50% of major road accidents are caused by risk driving behaviors from professional drivers of HDVs.” This is a staggering statistic when you consider that these are professional drivers who rely on their driving skills for their livelihood. However, drivers of heavy goods vehicles, who are generally highly skilled and professional drivers have to deal with monotony and pressure. They have to drive for many hours at a time, driving goods from one place to another. This fosters boredom and tiredness which of course can lead to errors. On top of this, when working alone for so many hours, there is an impulse to connect. In this day and age this is done through cell phones and their applications which can be a distraction to their driving.

First responders have to take calculated risks when trying to save lives. Every second counts when racing to fire, when transporting a critically ill patient to hospital or speeding to a crime scene. However, they are highly trained to deal with these situations, the adrenaline kick helps keep them alert and they are not doing it for long periods of time. Therefore, statistically the incidence of accidents is not as high as expected for such high speed, dangerous driving.

Sales representatives are highly pressurized to get from appointment to appointment and have to drive for long periods of time. This can lead them to some of these drivers driving fast and erratically at times. Their presumed need to keep in contact with clients and work constantly can lead them to use messaging apps as they are driving. Pressure, tiredness and distraction are a deadly cocktail.

Bus and taxi drivers have the responsibility of the safety of their passengers but also have a grueling schedule. Busses need to keep to their timetables and taxi drivers need to pick up more fares. This can lead to errors but at least with constant eyes upon them, they are unlikely to drive illegally.

There is no question that a person’s occupation can impact their driving, especially when they are driving for long periods of time or are under a lot of pressure to get from one place to another. It is important for those in charge of these drivers to foster a good driving ethic and remove unnecessary pressures that can make the job fatal.

Our cars are becoming more and more technologically advanced. Today we don’t just have car radios, we have whole multimedia systems preinstalled with a larger and larger screen. We have navigational tools to help us to get from place to place, and car information and controls at our fingertips. Our smartphones with all their applications add to cacophony in the cockpit. Do these functions add to our driving experience or distract us from our driving?

There is no question that certain technological advances have made driving cars a lot safer. Whilst self-driving cars, that will negate driver error, are still in their infancy, self-braking cars and cars equipped with warning systems are helping the driver to react to hazards that they may not have otherwise noticed. People generally do not want their car rebuking them with a beep and so they keep in their lanes more and keep their distance from the car in front.

Navigation instruments are often preinstalled in the car’s multimedia center, if not people run them through their smartphone. These can really assist the driver to find his way effortlessly. They do not need to try to map read when driving and prevent them from getting lost and driving erratically as a result. It will also tell them which route is optimal based on traffic conditions, which helps to slightly alleviate the congestion on roads. However, many driver’s feel the need to interact with the system whilst they are driving. This obviously is a distraction as it takes their eyes momentarily off the road.

Multimedia systems can entertain the driver and stop them from becoming bored. “Listening to music could be […] a preventive measure in favor of cardiovascular health in situations of intense stress, such as driving during rush hour.” Prof. Vitor Engrácia Valenti. However, other research concludes that listening to the wrong music, such as fast tempoed or aggressive music can influence the driving style negatively. The main safety issue of the multimedia system is that it can be a distraction as the driver tries to interact with it, for instance to find the music track they want. The obvious solution to this is to set it up before embarking on the journey and stick to it.

There are many smartphone applications that help a person to connect. Most are messaging apps. Many people are addicted to them and find it difficult not to investigate the new message as it comes in or to respond to it. Not only is this illegal but it is highly dangerous as it takes the drivers eyes and mind off of the road. The best solution, where possible, is to turn off the phone when driving or use an application that mutes it whilst driving.

Most technology has the ability to enhance and even make driving safer. However, some technology can be a distraction. The level of distraction is dependent on the character of the person driving the car, but technology, when used incorrectly can be lethal.
